Second book in the series. Following on from Don't Look At Me In That Tone Of Voice! - Memories of a Confused Sixties Childhood, we pick up from where the last book left off. It is now 1973 and we follow Alex through her first day at high school, meeting stranger teachers than ever, eventful camping trips, teenage crushes on seventies popstars and much more. Still in the background is the same family, attention seeking mother, father still trying as hard as possible not to be noticed and terrified that people are talking about his family and a little brother of a nervous disposition. Set to the backdrop of blackouts, strikes and water shortages. A must for everyone who grew up in the seventies. "I wanted American Tan tights but my mother said English girls didn't have legs that colour, especially in Yorkshire." "The neighbours' became accustomed to the sight of my brother being dragged past their kitchen windows every morning by his legs." "It was years before I found out sticky back plastic was good old fashioned sellotape, we'd had loads of the stuff in the cupboard all that time, my dad 'borrowed' it from work." "I asked my mother what a training bra was, she said it trained your bosom. To do what, run a marathon". Out now Book 3 "Don't Blame Me, It's Everybody Else! " available to download.

This author's first book (DON'T LOOK AT ME IN THAT TONE OF VOICE) introduced her Mum, Dad, and younger brother. Let's just say (and I'm trying to be diplomatic here) they take some getting use to, so you might want to read THAT one first and ease yourself into the story gradually. Plus, it's one of the funniest books ever.In this book, our heroine is entering high school. Her teen years are not without anguish, living as she does with prematurely-aged parents stuck in a 1930's time warp. Fortunately, her Mum (frustrated diva, manic knitter of strange clothes, and bean chef extraordinaire) is now focused on her career as Yorkshire's least-welcome Avon Lady and her daily struggle to drag her son to school and convince him to stay there. Always an unusual lad, he has added education to his long list of phobias which includes anything with wings and any food except beans.
Even a thirteen-year-old with a normal family wants to spread her wings, and poor Alex is desperate to join in any activity that gets her out of the house. But even when she's away from home her life takes some strange twists. Always a kid with a positive genius for attracting weird people, her stories about school teachers, youth group leaders, and employers make you wonder what exactly Yorkshire authorities were putting in the water in those days. Suffice to say if there was any activity going on that involved certifiably-insane adult leaders and ended in disaster, Alex was there!
At sixteen she left school, her mother being anxious for her to start working and paying room-and-board. As Alex says sardonically, "She always wanted the best for me!" Within a year she was married and (amazingly) is still married to the same man.
This author has a great talent for humor and I do hope that she will keep writing. I know she has more funny stories to tell and I want to hear them all. Hopefully, there will be a third book which answers the burning question, "Exactly how big WAS Ray's chipolata?"

Don't Tell My Mum! Memories of a Confused Seventies Childhood Confused Childhood Alex Cotton 9781521100080 Books Reviews
Another book down that steadily kept me laughing and smiling. On to the next book that I am sure will have me laughing some more. What a great way to spend a Saturday.
Part 2 of the continuing adventures of a girl growing up in the 70's . In this book ,she is in her teens ,so she talks a lot about high school , friends, dating, and more funny antics with her family. Another really cute book !
Very funny.
This is one of those books that made me embarrass myself by laughing out loud while reading in public! I can't wait to read her other books!
Mildly interesting story.
Poor punctuation throughout, with commas used in situations (I'm talking 2-4/page) in situations where a PERIOD is mandatory.
Okay, I'm a picky punctuation person, but when the errors are so egregious and frequent that it makes my reading a chore, I'm not a happy camper.
Example I opened the book at random and found this...
"At school we had all moved up a year again, we only had one more year left before we were all to be let loose on the world. I wasn't thinking about that yet though, at the moment I couldn't see past the next Saturday and what I could buy in town with my pocket money."
That is two consecutive run-on sentences, back to back.
I swear there is at least one similar example per page.
Because of the myriad errors, I stumbled throughout the book.
This author badly needs to hire an editor, IMO.
This whole series is a hoot ! You might not fall over laughing but if you're over 50...you'll smile and say, "I remember doing that !" and you really will ! Funny, easy, unpretentious reading. I enjoyed every word and didn't have to flip, flip, flip to an interesting part...It's all good !
Except has a bit of a "canned laughter" feel to it. Still humorous and brings back nostalgic memories of the 70 's, even though I am a little older and from the USA.
Have the next two books of the four parts series. Hoping they're more like first book, and less a collection of stories that does not have quite the fluidity throughout.
Recommended yet.
I found myself laughing out loud reading parts of this book and could completely relate to many of the experiences. I particularly remember my parents also asking in complete bewilderment what my school friend and I could possibly need to chat on the phone about when we'd spent the entire day together and would be seeing each other again tomorrow! Obviously many other anecdotes are unique to the author and I for one am delighted she decided to share. I loved this book which is written with warmth and humour and I found it hugely entertaining.
